Powder Blue Isopod Care Guide for Beginners
- Experience level: Beginner
- Adult size: About 1cm
- Lifespan: 2–3 years
- Enclosure: A ventilated tub around 30 x 20 x 15cm suits a starter colony. Our Isopod Culture Tubs and Isopod Enclosure Starter Kit are made for this.
- Temperature: 22–27°C; room temperature in most homes.
- Humidity: Moderate: a small moist area with the rest drier; they cope with drier setups well.
- Lighting: No UVB needed. Normal room light for a natural day/night cycle is enough; keep out of direct sun.
- Substrate and décor: 5–8cm of our Springtail & Isopod Substrate Mix, topped with leaf litter, cork bark and rotting hardwood.
- Diet: Leaf litter and decaying hardwood as staples, plus small amounts of vegetables and a protein such as fish flakes. Keep cuttlebone in at all times for calcium.
- Handling: Safe to handle gently. Most keepers enjoy them as a display colony or as a clean-up crew in bioactive enclosures.
- Licence: No licence is needed for most invertebrates, but rules vary by state and species, so check before you buy if you are interstate.
