Smooth Knob-tailed Gecko Care Guide for Beginners
- Experience level: Beginner
- Adult size: About 10cm
- Lifespan: 10–15+ years
- Enclosure: At least 60 x 45 x 45cm for one adult. It lives on the ground, so floor space matters most.
- Temperature: Warm end 30–32°C using a heat mat or heat cable under one end, cool end 22–24°C, cooler at night.
- Humidity: Low, around 30–40%, with one humid hide of damp substrate to help shedding.
- Lighting: UVB is optional for this nocturnal species; low-level UVB (around 5%) is beneficial. Keep a 12-hour day/night cycle.
- Substrate and décor: Fine Desert Sand or a sand and soil mix at least 8–10cm deep for burrowing, with flat rocks and hides.
- Diet: Insectivore: appropriately sized crickets, woodies and roaches every 2–3 days for adults. Dust with calcium.
- Handling: Usually tolerant of gentle handling. Keep it low over the substrate, as geckos can jump.
- Licence: A reptile licence is required in most Australian states before you buy. See our Reptile & Frog Licensing guide.
Everything you need: Fine Desert Sand, Heat Mat, Electronic Reptile Thermostat, Feeder Woodies.
