Flat Scorpion Spider (Trochanteriidae sp.) for Sale

Meet one of Australia’s most unusual spiders. Trochanteriid flat spiders have bodies so flattened they can slip into the thinnest gaps under bark, with wide-set legs that splay out to the sides like a crab’s. By day they hide pressed flat beneath bark and stones. At night they emerge as lightning-fast hunters. They’re harmless to people, easy to care for and fascinating to watch.

Flat Scorpion Spider Care Guide for Beginners

Enclosure
A low enclosure around 20x15x15cm suits one spider. Floor space matters more than height. Use a secure, well-fitted lid, as flat spiders can squeeze through very small gaps.

Hides
This is the most important part of the setup. Layer several flat pieces of cork bark close together, leaving narrow gaps for your spider to wedge into, just as it would under tree bark in the wild.

Temperature
20–26°C. Room temperature suits most homes.

Humidity
Mist one corner lightly every few days, and keep good ventilation so the enclosure doesn’t stay wet.

Substrate
A thin layer of Dry or Wet Sclerophyll Substrate Mix, with leaf litter on top.

Feeding
Small crickets, fruit flies or small woodies every few days. Remove uneaten food after 24 hours.

Handling
Flat spiders are extremely fast, so they’re best kept as a display animal rather than handled. Move them with a cup or a flat piece of bark.

Flat spider FAQ

Are flat spiders dangerous?
No. They’re not considered dangerous to people. Like most spiders they can bite if handled roughly, but they’d much rather run and hide.

Why are they called flat spiders?
Their bodies are extremely flattened so they can live in the narrow gaps under bark and stones.

What do flat spiders eat?
Small live insects, such as small crickets, fruit flies and woodies.

Pairs well with: Virgin Portuguese Cork Bark, Glass Insect Enclosure w/ Mesh Lid, Flightless Fruit Fly Culture, Dry Sclerophyll Substrate Mix.
