Albino White Isopods (Porcellio scaber "White Out" or "Snow") are pure white, beginner-friendly woodlice that lack melanin pigments across their entire body, including their compound eyes.
Key Characteristics & Biology
- Appearance: Solid white exoskeleton and white eyes caused by an autosomal recessive gene mutation.
- Size: Adults grow up to 17 mm to 20 mm in length.
- Temperament: Known to play dead when disturbed and prefer hiding under dark bark.
- Breeding Rate: Prolific and fast-breeding in proper conditions.
Care & Enclosure Requirements
- Enclosure: A simple ventilated plastic tub with a deep burrowing substrate and a clear moisture gradient (one side humid with moss, the opposite side dry).
- Temperature: Thrives best between 17°C and 26°C.
- Humidity: Maintain moderate humidity levels around 50% to 70%. They struggle in overly wet or tropical settings.
- Diet: Detritivores that feed on decaying plant leaves, rotting white wood, vegetables (like carrots or yams), and a protein source such as fish flakes or dried mealworms 2x a week.
- Calcium: Essential for exoskeleton health; provide cuttlefish bone, eggshell powder, or limestone.
Availability & Usage
-
Role: Commonly used as a clean-up crew in bioactive terrariums or as soft-bodied feeder isopods for small reptiles and amphibians.
Porcellio scaber "White Out" is the official albino morph of the rough woodlouse. Known for their ghost-like appearance and completely white eyeballs, these hardy, prolific isopods make excellent beginner pets and bioactive tank cleaners. They thrive on a varied diet and a moisture-gradient setup. - Size: Up to 18mm. Temperature: 17 – 26C.
- Humidity: 50 - 60% (Provide a dry end and a damp moss end).
- Diet: Omnivorous. Relies heavily on decaying wood, leaf litter, and a protein-rich supplement twice a week (e.g., fish food).
- Extras: Require a calcium source (like cuttlefish bone) for healthy molting.
-
Habitat Setup Create a gradient within the enclosure by keeping about 1/3 of the tank moist with a "hydration station" (damp sphagnum moss) and the rest drier. Add layers of decaying leaf litter, pieces of rotting wood, and cork bark hides.
