Why a bioactive blue tongue enclosure?
Blue tongues are natural diggers and foragers. A deep, natural substrate with leaf litter lets them burrow, forage and hide the way they do in the wild, and it holds humidity better than a bare floor, which helps with healthy shedding. Add springtails and isopods, and they’ll help break down waste and keep the substrate fresh.

Setting up your blue tongue enclosure

  • Basking spot: 32–35°C under the basking lamp.
  • Cool end: 22–26°C.
  • Night: around 18–20°C, with lights off.
  • UVB: run it 12 hours a day on the Wi-Fi timer.
  • Humidity: 40–60%, with a damp hide to help shedding.
  • Substrate: keep it 10cm+ deep so your skink can dig.
  • Thermostat: run your heat sources through a thermostat to prevent overheating and burns.
  • Diet: a mix of leafy greens and vegetables with protein such as insects, snails and lean meat, dusted with the included Calcium + D3.

Blue tongue enclosure FAQ

What size enclosure does a blue tongue lizard need?
At least 120x60x60cm for an adult. Blue tongues live on the ground, so floor space matters more than height.

What is the best substrate for a blue tongue lizard?
A firm, diggable soil-and-sand mix that holds some moisture at the bottom and stays dry on top, like our Dry Sclerophyll Substrate Mix, included in this kit.

Do blue tongue lizards need UVB?
Yes. UVB helps them make vitamin D3 and use calcium for strong bones. This kit includes UVB lighting and Calcium + D3.

Can a shingleback use this kit?
Yes. Shinglebacks need a very similar setup. Keep the enclosure on the drier side with good ventilation.

Do I need anything else?
We recommend adding an Electronic Reptile Thermostat and a thermometer, plus your lizard’s food.

Pairs well with: Blue Tongue Skink (Tiliqua scincoides), Shingleback Skink (Tiliqua rugosa), Electronic Reptile Thermostat, Springtail Cultures, Virgin Portuguese Cork Bark.
